Location

The Federico Santa María University is in the city of Valparaíso, Region of Valparaíso, 120 km to the northwest of Santiago, on the Pacific coast. Valparaiso is recognized as a cultural heritage site due to its historic charm. Nearby is the city of Viña de Mar, the 'Garden City', one of Chile's popular beach resorts, with excellent hotels, restaurants, and shopping areas. 

 

Getting to the region of Valparaíso

The region of Valparaiso is connected to the International Airport of Santiago by the Ruta 68 highway. There are several alternatives to get you from the airport to your Hotel in Valparaiso or Viña del Mar:

Public Transportation: 

Airport bus (airport to bus station) + Inter-provincial Bus (bus station to Viña del Mar/Valparaíso) + local taxi or Uber/DiDi. 

The airport bus stop is located right outside the airport building. There are two service providers: 

 

Centropuerto

Operating hours:

Airport – Pajaritos bus station: 06:00 AM - 10:30 PM (Mon-Sun), every 15 min service frequency. 

 

Pajaritos bus station – Airport: 06:00 AM – 10:40 PM (Mon-Sun), every 15 min service frequency. 

Fare: CLP $2.000 (cash only). 

 

TurBus Aeropuerto

Operating hours:  

Airport – Pajaritos bus station - Airport: 05:30AM – 10:45 PM (Mon – Sun), every 10-15 min service frequency. 

Fare: CLP $1.900 (cash only). 

 

“Pajaritos bus station” is the first bus stop (15-20 min. drive) and it is where you will have to get off to make the connection for the next leg of the trip. You should enter the building and buy an inter-provincial bus ticket to Viña del Mar or Valparaiso, in one of the ticket counters located inside (we suggest TurBus or Pullman). The fare is approximately CLP 5000. When entering the bus, please note that your ticket has a seat number (Spanish: "Asiento") assigned to it.   

 

Didi has recently arrived in Chile so if you have the app already, you may purchase your ticket there at a more convenient price.  

 

The trip from Pajaritos to Viña del Mar/Valparaíso takes about 90 minutes. Once you arrive at your destiny, you will find taxis parked right outside of the Bus station. You may also book a ride with Uber or DiDi.  

 

Airport Taxi:

There is a 24 hour taxi service from the airport, called "Taxioficial". The transfer cost to Viña de Mar/Valparaíso is CLP $129.000 and can carry up to 3 passengers with luggage.

By car:

There are several major car rental companies which have their offices in the Airport of Santiago, such as  Rentcars and Europcar. The cars are equipped with GPS navigators, so you will easily get to your destination.

To reach the Federico Santa María Technical University (UTFSM) campus in Valparaíso from either a hotel in Viña del Mar or the Ibis Hotel in Valparaíso, you have several convenient transportation options:

🚍 From Viña del Mar

By Bus:

  • Route: Take the Line 214 bus, which connects Viña del Mar to Valparaíso. 

  • Boarding: You can catch this bus at various stops in Viña del Mar.

  • Duration: Approximately 12 minutes.

  • Fare: Around CLP $500–$800.

By Metro:

  • Route: Board the Valparaíso Metro (Merval) at the Viña del Mar station.

  • Disembark: Get off at Estación Portales.

  • Walk: From Estación Portales, it's about a 12-minute uphill walk to the university. 

  • Fare: Between CLP $410–$864, depending on distance and time of day.

By Taxi:

  • Duration: Approximately 6 minutes.

  • Fare: Around CLP $7,000–$10,000

  • Note: Taxis are readily available throughout Viña del Mar. Rome2Rio

🚍 From Ibis Hotel in Valparaíso

By Bus:

  • Route: Take the Line 101 bus towards the university. 

  • Boarding: There are multiple stops near the Ibis Hotel; consult local signage or a transit app for the nearest one.

  • Duration: Approximately 14 minutes.

  • Fare: Around CLP $500–$800.

By Metro:

  • Route: Board the Valparaíso Metro (Merval) at the Puerto station.

  • Disembark: Get off at Estación Portales.
