We look for cosmic strings solutions, which arise as topological defects in the equations of motion of an extension of the Standard Model (SM). These cosmic strings are vortices with a filament structure formed by the $U(1)_{B-L}$ (baryon-number minus lepton-number) gauge field. We include this gauge field to turn $B-L$ into a local symmetry such that it becomes naturally exact. In this extension we also include a new scalar Higgs field and a sterile right-handed neutrino, curing the previous anomalies that prohibited this gauge field in the minimal version of the SM. Furthermore we can obtain a mass term for neutrinos through the Higgs mechanism and the right-handed neutrino.
