Abstract content
Thanks to recent progress in Cherenkov detection technique, VHE astrophysics has stepped out of its infancy and has evolved into a mature branch of astronomy. The next stage in the evolution of the field should be the construction of a major new observatory accepting peer-reviewed proposals from the general astronomical community. As part of the planning exercise for this Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project, a physics working group has been established, drawn mainly (but not exclusively) from the membership of the HESS and MAGIC consortia, to discuss the physics issues that should drive the design of such an observatory. The results of this study will be presented.
