From Particle Physics to Particle Therapy: Designs of Next Generation Hadron Therapy Facilites
Content
While the mandate of particle physics research institutes is fundamental research, the developed technologies find applications for the benefit of society. In particular, the development of accelerators, that is the heart of such research centres, has boosted cancer tumour therapy. The last few years the NIMMS Next Ion Medical Machine Study group at CERN is developing novel accelerator components that can be used by next generation therapy facilities. Such multidisciplinary projects in regions interested to develop such facilities are also expected to strengthen scientific expertise, stimulate the development of complementary technologies and to trigger spin-offs. In order to stimulate related capacity building, in support of such projects, a broad spectrum of activities is being developed to address diverse communities spanning from high-school students to professionals. The NIMMS recent developments and such capacity building activities will be outlined in this presentation.
