Quantum Computation of Heavy Quarkonium Masses

Abstract

We compute the s-wave masses of charmonium, a simple heavy quark bound state, using a quantum processor. We encode a Hamiltonian in a 3-qubit quantum circuit and measure its expectation value with respect to a ground state ansatz. Our results agree with classical calculations to high accuracy. This research constitutes the first quantum computation of a simple quark bound state, providing a steppingstone toward quantum computations of hadronic states with more complex quark structures.
