Abstract

The study of excited nucleon N∗ states through the electroproduction of different exclusive channels is an important avenue for probing the nature of the non-perturbative strong interaction responsible for their generation. Experiments to study N∗ states over the nucleon resonance region have been completed based on analyses of CLAS πN, ηN, KY , and ππN data for Q2 < 5 GeV2 . Advances in our understanding of the spectrum of the N∗ s and their structure based on these data will be discussed and how further studies, in particular for the KY channels, will make use of the new precision CLAS12 data. Detailed analysis of the CLAS data has also been used to extract the p → N∗ transition form factors that are already providing a wealth of data on N∗ structure and its evolution with Q2 . For higher-lying N∗ states, the KY channels will be necessary to compare against the results from the ππN channel to cross check the findings. A program to study the spectrum and structure of N∗ states in the exclusive KY electroproduction channels using CLAS12 will measure differential cross sections and polarization observables and will be used as input to extract the electrocouplings for the most prominent N∗ states that couple to KY over a broad range of distance scales spanning the domain of Q2 up 12 GeV2 . Results, prospects, and plans based on the first year of CLAS12 operations will be discussed
