Summary
DESI has recently provided us with hints that the accelerated expansion of the Universe might not be due to a cosmological constant after all, but rather a form of dynamical dark energy. At the same time, modular symmetries (widely studied in flavor physics) are showing up as key players in string theory, since modular invariance is built right into string compactifications. In this work, we highlight the link between the two. We focus on scalar potentials from heterotic orbifolds, where the geometry shapes both the flavor structure and the dynamics of the moduli. An interesting feature is that the dynamics of these modular fields can give rise to multifield hilltop quintessence, compatible with DESI observations and consistent with the Swampland conjectures.
