Indirect upper limits on $\ell_i\to\ell_j\gamma\gamma$ from $\ell_i\to\ell_j\gamma$

Abstract
We perform an effective field theory analysis of the charged lepton flavor violating processes ℓi→ℓjγγ and ℓi→ℓjγ. We show that, even in the extreme scenario where only the double photon emission is allowed at tree level, loop corrections can still induce large ratios for ℓi→ℓjγ, what we then use to set model-independent upper limits on ℓi→ℓjγγ. We find that our bounds are about three orders of magnitude stronger than current experimental direct limits for μ→eγγ, and four orders of magnitude better than previous considerations for τ→ℓγγ, although the latter could be improved by direct searches at Belle II.
