Quantum Simulation of the CP(N-1) Model with Ultracold Alkaline Earth Atoms
Abstract
We propose an experimental implementation for the quantum simulation of the 2-d CP(N−1) model, which shares important features with (3+1)-d QCD. This model can be constructed from a system of discrete SU(N) symmetric spins which undergo dimensional reduction, rendering continuous field values. The spin variables are defined in terms of the N = 2I+1 nuclear spin states of alkaline earth atoms, trapped in a bipartite optical lattice. Taking advantage of the control and tunability, which are now standard in optical lattice experiments, we propose measurements which can be compared to results of Monte Carlo simulations by means of a loop-cluster algorithm.
