DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Dr. DE SOUZA\, Vitor (University of Karlsruhe)\nIn t
his work we investigate new statistical parameters to infer the mass compo
sition\nof high energy cosmic rays above $10^{17}$ eV.\nTrying to overcome
the difficulties imposed by large fluctuations and limited\nexperimental
observables\, we present a statistical method for composition studies\nbas
ed on several measurable features of the longitudinal and lateral developm
ent of\nthe air shower. \nPrincipal component analysis (PCA) and linear di
scriminant analysis (LDA) were used\nto combine the different parameters a
nd to maximize the discrimination between\ndifferent primary particle show
ers. In this contribution we compare the discrimation\npower of the new pr
oposed methods with the traditional ones used in cosmic ray\nstudies. The
work is based on Monte Carlo simulations and the difference between\nprogr
 ams is also presented.\n\nhttps://indico.nucleares.unam.mx/event/4/session
