 s the latest addition\nto the atmospheric monitoring instruments of the Pi
 erre Auger Observatory.\nAn optical telescope equipped with CCD camera and
  photometer\, it\nautomatically observes a set of selected standard stars 
 and a calibrated\nterrestrial source. Primarily\, the wavelength dependenc
 e of the\nattenuation is derived and the comparison between its vertical v
 alues (for\nstars) and horizontal values (for the terrestrial source) is m
 ade.\nFurther\, the integral vertical aerosol optical depth can be obtaine
 d. A\nsecondary program of the instrument\, the detection of optical count
 erparts\nof gamma-ray bursts\, has already proven successful. The hardware
  setup\,\nsoftware system\, data taking procedures\, and first analysis re
