DESCRIPTION:Speakers: MULLIGAN\, Tamitha (The Aerospace Corporation\, Spac
 e Science Applications Laboratory\, Los Angeles\, CA\, USA)\nIn mid Decemb
er 2006 several flares on the Sun occurred in rapid succession\, \nspawnin
g several CMEs and bathing the Earth in multiple solar energetic \nparticl
e (SEP) events. One such SEP occurring on December 15th was observed \nat
the Earth just as an interplanetary CME (ICME) from a previous flare on \n
December 13th was transiting the Earth. Although solar wind observations \
nduring this time show typical energetic proton fluxes from the prior SEP
and IP \nshock driven ahead of the ICME\, as the ICME passes the Earth unu
sual \nenergetic particle signatures are observed. Measurements from ACE\,
Wind\, and \nSTEREO show unusual proton flux variations at energies rangi
ng from ~3 MeV \nup to greater than 70 MeV. Within the Earth’s magnetosp
here Polar HIST also \nsees unusual proton flux variations at energies gre
ater than 10 MeV while \ncrossing open field lines in the southern polar c
ap. However\, no such variation \nin the energetic proton flux is observed
at the GOES 10 or GOES 11 spacecraft \nin geosynchronous orbit. Different
ial fluxes observed at GOES 12 in the 15-40 \nMeV energy range show some v
ariation. However\, the overall energetic particle \nsignature within the
ICME at GEO orbits remains unclear. This event illustrates \nthe need for
caution when using GEO data in statistical studies of SEP events \nand in
interplanetary models of energetic particle transport to 1 AU.\n\nhttps://
