DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Dr. GORA\, Dariusz (INP - Poland\, Universitat Karls
ruhe (TH))\nHigh energetic neutrinos coming from space can interact either
in the atmosphere \nor in the Earth. In the first scenario neutrino ma
y initiate extensive air showers\n(EAS) in the atmosphere\, but due to the
ir very small interaction cross section in air\nonly very inclined EAS
might be detectable by large detectors. In the second scenario \n neutr
ino may interact inside the Earth and produce a charge lepton which aft
er\nseveral interactions emerges from the Earth and decays above the grou
nd. Among the\nthree neutrino species\, the showers initiated by tau n
eutrinos are the most \npromising\nto be detected. In this paper we prese
nt a study about the possibility to detect\nneutrino induced extensive air
showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory. The Monte\nCarlo simulations per
formed take into account the details of the neutrino\npropagation inside
the Earth\, the air\n as well as the surrounding mountains which are mode
lled by a digital elevation map.\nDetails on the sensitivity with respect
to the incoming direction as well \n as the aperture\, the total observab
le event rates on the basis of various assumptions \n of the incoming neut
rino flux and an upper limit for ultra high energy neutrinos\,\nabove 0.1
 EeV\, are calculated.\n\nhttps://indico.nucleares.unam.mx/event/4/session/

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Prof. KAMPERT\, Karl-Heinz (University of Wuppertal\
 , Germany)\nA possible signature of a neutrino-induced air shower is a nea
r-horizontal event \ndeveloping very deeply in the atmosphere at depths ex
ceeding a few thousand g/cm^2. \nMaking use of high-statistics shower libr
aries we study the background to such events from: \n(1) high-energy muons
produced in primary proton events\, which may propagate deeply \ninto the
  atmosphere before initiating a subcascade\; (2) primary photons\, which m
ay start \nto cascade late due to a suppression of the Bethe-Heitler cross
-section by the LPM effect. \nThe rates of background events are compared
with various flux models of ultra-high energy \nneutrino production.\n\nht

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Dr. HONDA\, Morihiro (Institute for Cosmic Ray Resea
rch\, Univ. of Tokyo)\nThe atmospheric neutrino is still an important tool
in the study \nof neutrino physics. The uncertainty of the predicted atmo
spheric \nneutrino flux is caused by the uncertainties in the physical \na
ssumptions and in the calculation scheme. \nWe discuss them quantitatively
\, and present the works to reduce them. \nThe uncertainty related to the
hadronic interaction model was \ndiscussed before\, therefore\, we mainly
study other uncertainty sources \nthan the hadronic interaction model here

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Dr. BARR\, Giles (Oxford University)\nStarting from
a survey of experimental measurements\, we assign uncertainties to the\ntw
o most critical inputs to the calculation of fluxes of unoscillated atmosp
heric\nneutrinos\, the hadron production and the primary cosmic ray fluxes
. We then\npropagate these uncertainties through the entire flux calculat
ion to arrive at\nestimates of the uncertainties in the fluxes of neutrino
s and of various ratios of\nneutrino fluxes. We find that there is indeed
a significant cancellation of flux\nuncertainties when these ratios are m
ade. The uncertainties as a function of\nneutrino energy will be presente
 d.\n\nhttps://indico.nucleares.unam.mx/event/4/session/66/contribution/329

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Mr. JAMES\, Clancy (University of Adelaide)\nThe Lun
ar Cherenkov technique\, which aims to detect the coherent Cherenkov \nra
diation\nproduced when UHE particles interact in the lunar regolith\, was
first attempted \nwith\nthe Parkes radio-telescope in 1995\, though the th
eory was not sufficiently \ndeveloped\nat this time to calculate a limit o
n the UHE neutrino flux from the non-\nobservation.\nSince then\, the tech
nique has evolved to include experiments utilising lower\nfrequencies\, wi
der bandwidths\, and entire arrays of antenna. Simulations of \nthe\ntech
nique have likewise evolved\, providing new insight into the dependence of
\nexperimental sensitivity on the set-up. We develop a simulation to anal
yse the \nfull\nrange of experiments\, and calculate the UHE neutrino flux
limit from\nthe Parkes experiment\, including the directional dependence.
  Our results \nsuggest a\nmethodology for planning future observations\, a
nd demonstrate how to utilise \nall\navailable information on the nature o
f radio pulses from the Moon for the \ndetection\nof UHE particles.\n\nhtt

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Dr. ALVAREZ-MUNIZ\, Jaime (IGFAE and Dept. Fisica de
Particulas\, Univ. de Santiago de Compostela\, Spain)\nThe properties of
extremely energetic neutrino- and cosmic ray-induced\nshowers depend on th
e shower energy\, on the type of particle initiating the shower\,\nand on
the medium. Studying these dependences is important both for understanding
\ncascade phenomenology\, and for estimating the efficiency of experiment
s using the radio \ntechnique. In this contribution we study the feasibili
ty of applying 'thinning\ntechniques'\nto the simulation of extremely ener
getic electromagnetic showers.\nWe show that thinning is a powerful tool t
hat allows a considerable reduction in\ncomputing time while keeping a goo
d level of accuracy in the relevant shower \nand radio observables produce
d in the simulations. We apply thinning techniques\nto the simulation of E
eV electromagnetic showers in a variety of materials\,\nincluding the Land
au-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect that is relevant for shower\ndevelopment at v
ery high energies. This study is essential in determining\nthe sensitivity
to extremely energetic neutrinos and cosmic rays of\nexperiments looking
for radiopulses in ice such as RICE and ANITA\, \nand in the moon regolith
such as LUNASKA\, the Westerbork radiotelescope \narray and LOFAR.\n\nhtt
