 sing method for the detection of UHE neutrinos is the Lunar Cherenkov\ntec
 hnique\, which utilises Earth-based radio-telescopes to detect the coheren
 t\nCherenkov radiation emitted when one of these particles interacts in th
 e outer \nlayers\nof the Moon. The LUNASKA project aims to overcome the te
 chnological \nlimitations of\npast experiments to utilise the next generat
 ion of radio-telescopes in the \nsearch for\nthese elusive particles. To t
 ake advantage of road-bandwidth data from \npotentially\nthousands of ante
 nna requires advances in signal processing technology. Here \nwe\ndescribe
  recent developments in this field and their application in the search for
 \nUHE neutrinos\, from a preliminary experiment using the first stage of a
 n \nupgrade to\nthe Australia Telescope Compact Array\, to possibilities f

 ra-high energy neutrino experiments using ice as a target medium rely \non
  the Askaryan effect (coherent impulsive radio Cherenkov radiation from th
 e \ncharge asymmetry in an electromagnetic shower). This effect was measur
 ed \nwith the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment at 
 the \nStanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in June 2006. The showers 
 were \nproduced by 28.5 GeV electron bunches with typically number density
  of 10^9\nper bunch impacting a 7.5 metric ton ice target (roughly 12.5 ra
 diation lengths). \nIn this paper we present the measured angular and freq
 uency dependence of \nthe radiation and compare the results with the predi

 Frascati)\nThe EEE (Extreme Energy Event) Project is an extensive air show
 er experiment devoted\nto the study of very high energy events through the
  detection at ground of the muon\ncomponent of the shower. The detectors a
 re installed inside many Italian High\nSchools\, involving students in the
  experiment. The detector used is a tracking\ntelescope made of 3 planes o
 f Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs)\, a\nsimplified\, large and c
 heap version of the detector designed for the time of flight\nmeasurements
  (TOF) of the ALICE experiment at LHC. Exploiting the concept of the\nmult
 iple small gas gaps combined with the use of high gain and fast gas mixtur
 e\n(Freon and SF6 based)\, the MRPCs show an overall time resolution of 10
 0 ps. The\nparticle tracking is performed equipping MRPCs with 24 copper s
 trips read at both\nends by front end electronics based on NINO ASIC and u
 sing commercial multi-hit TDCs.\nThe MRPCs for the EEE experiment are buil
 t at CERN by Italian High School students\nand teachers under the supervis
 ion of INFN and Centro “E. Fermi” experts. After\nconstruction they ar
 e shipped to Italy and after preliminary tests they are installed\ninside 
 the schools.\nHere we present the status and first results of the already

SUMMARY:ARIANNA: A New Concept for UHE Neutrino Detection

 ine)\nThe ARIANNA concept utilizes the Ross Ice Shelf near the coast of An
 tarctica \nto increase the sensitivity to cosmogenic neutrinos by roughly 
 an order of \nmagnitude when compared to the sensitivity of existing detec
 tors and those \nunder construction. Therefore\, ARIANNA can test a wide v
 ariety of scenarios \nfor GZK neutrino production\, and probe for physics 
 beyond the standard \nmodel by measuring the neutrino cross-section at cen
 ter of mass energies \nnear 100 TeV. ARIANNA capitalizes on several remark
 able properties of \nthe Ross Ice Shelf: shelf ice is relatively transpare
 nt to electromagnetic \nradiation at radio frequencies and the water-ice b
 oundary below the shelf \ncreates a good mirror to reflect radio signals f
 rom interactions by neutrinos\ntraveling downward. The high sensitivity re
 sults from nearly six months of \ncontinuous operation\, low energy thresh
 old (~3x10^17 eV)\, and more than 2*pi\nof sky coverage. The baseline conc
 ept for ARIANNA consists of moderately \nhigh gain antenna stations arrang
 ed on a 100 x 100 square grid\, separated \nby about 300m. Each station co
 nsist of eight linearly polarized antennas \nresiding just beneath the sno
 w surface and facing downwards. They communicate \nwith each other and a c
 entral control hub by wireless links to generate global triggers.\nThis pa
 per describes the ARIANNA concept\, science goals\, and recent progress\ni

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Mr. VANDENBROUCKE\, Justin (University of California
 )\nAstrophysical neutrinos in the EeV range (particularly those generated 
 by the\ninteraction of cosmic rays with the microwave background) promise 
 to be a valuable\ntool to study astrophysics and particle physics at the h
 ighest energies.  Much could\nbe learned from temporal\, spectral\, and an
 gular distributions of ~100 events\, which\ncould be collected by a detect
 or with ~100 km^3 effective volume in a few years.  It\nwould be prohibiti
 ve to scale the optical Cherenkov technique to this sensitivity. \nHowever
 \, using the thick ice available at the South Pole\, the radio and acousti
 c\ntechniques promise to provide sufficient sensitivity with sparse instru
 mentation. \nThe best strategy may be a hybrid approach combining all thre
 e techniques.  A new\narray of acoustic transmitters and sensors\, the Sou
 th Pole Acoustic Test Setup\, was\ninstalled in three IceCube holes in Jan
 uary 2007.  The purpose of SPATS is to measure\nthe attenuation length and
  both Gaussian and transient background noise for 10-100\nkHz acoustic wav
 es.  Favorable results would pave the way for a large hybrid array. \nSPAT
 S is the first array to study the possibility of acoustic neutrino detecti
 on in\nice\, the medium expected to be best for the purpose.  The first re
