DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Dr. KNURENKO\, Stanislav (Yu. G. Shafer Institute of
  Cosmophysical Research and Aeronomy)\nThe characteristics relating to la
 teral and longitudinal development of EAS in the\nenergy region of 10**15
 - 10**19 eV have been analyzed in the framework of the QGSJET\nmodel and o
 f mass composition of primary cosmic rays. It is found that at E0 >=\n5x1
 0**15 eV the mean mass composition of primary cosmic rays begins to vary a
 s\nindicated by a rise of with increasing energy. The maximum value of
 is\nobserved at E0 ~(5 - 50) x10**16 eV. It is confirmed by data of many c
 ompact EAS\narrays and does not contradict to an anomal diffusion model of
  cosmic ray propagation\nin our galaxy (Lagutin et al.\, 2001). In the sup
 erhigh energy region (>= 10**18 eV)\nthe value  begins to decrease\, i.e.
 the mass composition becomes lighter and\nconsists from proton and nuclei
 of He and C. It does not contradict to our earlier\nestimations for the ma
 ss composition and points to a growing role of the metagalactic\ncomponent
  of cosmic rays in the superhigh energy region (Berezinsky et al.\, 2004).
