DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Dr. HANSEN\, Patricia Maria (Departamento de Fisica
de Particulas -Universidade de Santiago de Compostela-15782 Santiago de Co
mpostela\,Spain)\nAir shower simulation programs are used to reconstruct t
he energy in the UHECR\nsurface detectors. This reconstruction is based on
the lateral distribution function\nobtained in the experiment. It is also
known that this function at core distance\ngreater than 1 km strongly dep
ends on the low energy hadronic models used in the\nsimulation. There are
discrepancies in the particle production\ndue to the different models that
are used. This discrepancy is not only at high \n(>100 GeV) but also at
low energy. Almost all collider experiments show difficulties\nin the mea
surement of the diffractive cross section since they do not register\npart
icles emitted into the forward direction.\nA new version of the air shower
simulation programs AIRES\, with an improved treatment\nof the diffractiv
e cross section in the low energy hadronic model was developed.\nTo cross-
check this model\, we compare the results of the balloon born experiment\n
CAPRICE98\, on atmospheric fluxes of particles with this new version of A
