DESCRIPTION:Speakers: SCHOLTEN\, Olaf (KVI / RUG)\nIn an air shower induce
d by a cosmic ray\, due to the high velocities\, most of\nthe particles ar
e concentrated in the relatively thin shower front\, which\, for\nobvious
reasons\, is called the 'pancake'. This pancake\, which for the present\nd
iscussion is assumed to be charge neutral\, contains large numbers of elec
trons\nand positrons. It has a typical thickness of a few meters and is mo
ving to the\nsurface of the Earth with (almost) the velocity of light\, $c
$. When this\npancake is moving through the Earth magnetic field the Loren
tz force on the\ncharged particles induces a drift velocity and thus an el
ectric current in a\ndirection which is perpendicular to the magnetic fiel
d and the shower axis.\nThis fast-moving electrical current induces an ele
ctromagnetic pulse which can\nbe detected at the Earth surface. Because of
the typical length and time scales\ninvolved\, the intensity of the radia
tion is maximal in the frequency range of\n1-10 MHz\, and can thus be dete
cted with radio receivers.\n\nTo show the basic principles of the Macrosco
pic Geo-Magnetic Radiation (MGMR)\nmodel and we confine ourselves to a rat
her simple geometry where the cosmic\nshower moves straight to the Earth s
urface and where the Earth magnetic field\nis parallel to the Earth surfac
 e. In the limit where the thickness of the\npancake is shrinked to zero ev
en a simple analytic form for the electric pulse\ncan be derived. This sho
ws that the pulse height falls rapidly with distance to\nthe shower core\,
that with increasing distance the pulse lengthens\, and that\nthe leading
part of the pulse carries the information on the earlier parts of\nthe ai
 r shower.\n\nhttps://indico.nucleares.unam.mx/event/4/session/39/contribut
