 -luminous infra red galaxies (ULIRGs) have an enhanced starburst\nrate whi
 ch might be related to a large emission of very high\nenergy gamma rays.\n
 Arp 220 is the nearest ULIRG (72 Mpc) and a well studied object.\nThis sou
 rce was observed with the stand alone imaging atmospheric\n Cherenkov tele
 scope MAGIC for more than 15 hours on-source.\nNo significant gamma ray ex
 cess was detected during the observations.\nThe first upper limits to the 
 very high energy gamma ray flux\nwere obtained\, with an analysis energy t
 hreshold of 160 GeV.\nThe analysis results will be reported  and  compared
