DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Dr. ALVAREZ OCHOA\, Cesar (Facultad de Ciencias Fisi
co Matematicas Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla)\nGamma-ray burst
s (GRBs) have been observed up to energies of a few GeV by satellite\nobse
rvatories. In particular\, GRB941017 showed a spectral component extending
beyond\n200MeV and distinct from the previously observed at keV energies.
Ground based\ntelescopes have marginally observed very high energy emissi
on (>100GeV). For\ninstance\, the Milagrito observation of GRB970417a hint
ed at a distinct higher-energy\ncomponent inconsistent with an extrapolati
on of the observed emission at keV-MeV\nenergies. Therefore\, observations
of gamma-ray bursts at GeV energies will bring new\ninsights about the em
ission mechanisms and constrain the current GRB models. Milagro\nis a wide
field (2sr) high duty cycle (>90%) ground based water Cherenkov detector.
\nIt triggers mainly on extensive air showers (EAS) in the energy range fr
om 100 GeV to\n100 TeV. However\, individual photomultiplier tube counting
rates (scalers) are\nsensitive to EAS with energy as low as ~1GeV. In thi
s work\, the capabilities of\nMilagro to detect the high energy component
of GRBs using the scalers system are\npresented and compared with other ob
servatories such as the Pierre Auger Water\nCherenkov tanks.\n\nhttps://in
