Detectors for Gamma-Ray Astronomy.

La colaboración LAGO es un proyecto internacional de astrofísica y astropartículas donde participan grupos de múltiples instituciones de países de América Latina. Los objetivos de estudio de LAGO están orientados en tres ejes principales: fenómenos astrofísicos de muy altas energías, el clima espacial  y la radiación atmosférica en superficie. En este charla presentaremos los resultados de los trabajos realizados como parte de la caracterización  y puesta en marcha de dos nuevos detectores para la red LAGO, uno en la FCFM de la UNACH y otro en la cima del volcán Tacaná.  Mostraremos algunas simulaciones hechas para el calculo de la fluencia en ambos sitios, así como los avances realizados en la electrónica para la toma de datos.

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) is an ground-based TeV gamma ray observatory located on Puebla, Mexico. It collects the secondary particles of the shower that were produced by primary particles (gamma-ray or hadron) via indirect detection and it is optimized to detect the particles with energy from 300 GeV to above 100 TeV. Several researches have been made in the gamma-ray observatories and they concluded the main problem on this kind of observatories is the huge number of hadron events that are detected, therefore, they have to suppress these kind of particles on the analysis of gamma-ray sources. In this work will be described three kind of models for this task: one is the official one that is described as rectangle cut model involving two variables, and the last two use a machine learning techniques (boosted decision tree and neural network) in order to build a sophisticated model using various input variable.

Almost three decades ago, the Fly’s Eye experiment recorded the most energetic cosmic-ray ever observed. With an energy of 320 EeV, this event is well beyond the suppression region of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) spectrum. Modern and larger observatories, with an exposure up to 60 times larger, have never observed an event with even remotely comparable energy. Thus, if the energy of the Fly’s Eye event was indeed well measured, as strongly suggested by the data, then it remains a great mystery or an unbelievable stroke of luck. At such high energies, the Universe is very opaque to electromagnetic interacting particles, whether photons, protons or heavy nuclei, and therefore its source must be relatively close. Using numerical simulations for the propagation of protons and nuclei, we reexamine the problem by testing different possibilities for the nature of the primary, the injection spectrum and the location of the source. Based on these calculations, we show that the most feasible scenario corresponds to a nearby (∼ 2 − 3 Mpc) bursting source of heavy nuclei in the northern sky, which injected a hard spectrum (γ ≤ 1.5) with an energy cut-off between 300 and 1000 EeV. Such scheme generates a significant probability for the observation of one event by Fly’s Eye combined with a null result of Telescope Array at the same energy.

In this workshop an acquisition system will be implemented through a commercial processing system. Reading, data processing will be done using the Python programming language. Characteristic statistics for the analysis of the signals generated in the detector such as: amplitude, deposited charge and characteristic of time, will be processed through the use of ROOT software and thereby observe the behavior of the instrumented detector.

The Pierre Auger Observatory has been in operation for 15 years and has radically changed the view of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays within the community. I will summarize its results focussing on the large picture of where we stand in the field today compared to where we were when the project started, more than 20 years ago.

The high energy peaked blazars are known to undergo episodes of flaring in GeV-TeV gamma-rays involving different time scales and the flaring mechanism is not well understood despite long term simultaneous multiwavelength observations. These gamma-rays en route to Earth undergo attenuation by the extra galactic background light. 
Using the photohadronic model, where the seed photons follow a power-law spectrum and a template extragalactic background light model, we derive a simple relation between the observed multi-TeV gamma-ray flux and the intrinsic flux with a single parameter. We study 42 flaring epochs of 23 blazars and excellent fit to most of the observed spectra are obtained, further supporting the photohadronic origin of multi-TeV gamma-rays. 
We note that we can also constrain the power spectrum of the seed photons during the flaring period. Moreover for blazars of unknown redshifts, whose multi-TeV flaring spectra are known, stringent bounds on the former can be placed using the photohadronic model.

Astroparticle physics has recently reached a new status of precision due to the construction of new observatories,  operating innovative technologies, and the detection of large numbers of events and sources. The precise measurements of cosmic and gamma rays can be used as a test for fundamental physics, such as the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV).  Although LIV signatures are expected to be small, the very high energies and long distances that astrophysical sources involve, lead to an unprecedented opportunity for this task.  In this talk, I will present an update of the latest exclusion limits from different astrophysical LIV tests in the photon sector using the subluminal pair production threshold shift and superluminal photon decays. Updated perspectives for the next generations of gamma-ray telescopes will also be addressed.

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are powerful cosmic accelerators, manifested as numerous gamma-ray sources at GeV energies. They are suspected to generate the highest energy cosmic rays, a long term presumption now supported by the recent observation of neutrinos from a BL Lacertae object. The study of AGN at the highest gamma-ray energies is hampered by the interaction of very high energy photons with cosmic backgrounds of optical and infrared light, that sets a limit to the range of our observations. The HAWC observations of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 are providing fresh insight into the extreme processes of their central engines. I will review these observations and present the search for other AGN by HAWC.

Los Blazares se caracterizan por una distribución espectral de energía (SED, por su nombre en inglés) que presenta dos picos a diferentes energías. El primero está en frecuencias desde radio a rayos-X y el segundo en los rayos-gamma. El SED de los blazares comúnmente es explicado con una zona de emisión y como proceso de emisión el Compton Self-Synchrotron. En este escenario, se espera una fuerte correlación entre rayos-X y rayos-gamma. M. M. González, et al, 2019, utilizando datos de observatorios Cherenkov atmosféricos para el blazar Mrk 421, prueba dicha correlación usando un método de máxima verosimilitud, incluso en observaciones donde se afirmaba que no existía. Sin embargo la correlación se rompe a flujos altos de rayos-gamma. Se expande este trabajo con los blazares Mkn 501 y 1ES1959+650, ambos con una alta emisión en rayos-X y en rayos-gamma para inferir si existe un comportamiento similar en las correlaciones.

El estudio detallado de las características de las cascadas atmosféricas (estructura lateral, edad, tamaño, dirección de arribo, etc.) es una de las herramientas más útiles para obtener información sobre los rayos cósmicos. La distribución lateral de las partículas secundarias de un chubasco a nivel del suelo (LDF, por sus siglas en inglés) contiene información sobre la naturaleza del rayo cósmico primario, así como de su energía. En particular, de la pendiente de la distribución lateral se obtiene el parámetro de edad lateral, el cual describe el estado de desarrollo de la cascada a través de la atmósfera, y es sensible a la composición de los rayos cósmicos. Ahora bien, los estudios sobre la distribución lateral son difíciles de llevar a cabo debido a incertidumbres experimentales que pueden ser ocasionadas por el tamaño del detector y el tipo de técnica empleada para la detección. HAWC tiene la capacidad de llevar a cabo mediciones detalladas, evento por evento, de la distribución lateral de chubascos de partículas dada su área instrumentada, diseño cerrado, volumen y cobertura física, gran altitud y número de fotomultiplicadores. El observatorio HAWC es un arreglo denso de detectores de partículas ubicado en Puebla, México a 4,100 m s.n.m. dedicado al estudio de rayos cósmicos y rayos gamma en el rango de energía entre 100 GeV y 100 TeV, aunque puede medir rayos cósmicos de hasta 1 PeV. El arreglo experimental de HAWC cuenta con 300 detectores de agua Cherenkov que cubren el 62% de un área total de 22,000 m2. HAWC está equipado con 1,200 fotomultiplicadores y   60 millones de litros de agua. En este trabajo se presenta un estudio sobre la distribución lateral de chubascos inducidos por rayos cósmicos medidos por HAWC en el año 2016 con energías entre 3 TeV y 1 PeV y ángulo cenital < 16.7º. Los datos fueron usados para determinar la parametrización óptima de la distribución lateral en HAWC. De aquí el parámetro de edad es obtenido y su sensibilidad a la composición de los rayos cósmicos es analizada.

El Telescopio centellador de Rayos cósmicos instalado en Sierra Negra, Puebla, es un instrumento capaz de medir la dirección de arribo y energía de la radiación incidente con una alta resolución; con el objetivo de estudiar los diversos mecanismos físicos involucrados en su producción y transporte.

En esta presentación mostraré un estudio sobre el desempeño general del Telescopio, concentrándome principalmente en el espectro de energía de las partículas registradas. Para lograr dicha meta, nuestro estudio se apoya en los resultados de simulaciones Monte Carlo y en la caracterización experimental de los diferentes elementos que componen al telescopio.

El observatorio de rayos gamma HAWC monitorea dos tercios del cielo a energías en TeV. Uno de sus primeros resultados es el mapa de fuentes de rayos gamma a energías de decenas de TeV. La determinación de rayos gamma de energía más alta requiere una estimación de la energía lo más real posible. Las mediciones de cascadas de partículas con Telescopios Cherenkov Atmosférico y un arreglo en Tierra como HAWC, prometen una una mejora en la estimación de energía y la resolución angular. El rendimiento de una configuración híbrida, que combina un Telescopio Cherenkov Atmosférico con el observatorio HAWC de gran altitud, se evalúa con una simulación Monte Carlo. En este trabajo se presentan resultados preliminares de la simulación Monte Carlo.

In astroparticle physics, the identification and understanding of the sources of high-energy cosmic rays is one of the most important open problems. Knowing the elemental composition of cosmic ray particles arriving at Earth is of crucial importance to understand the production and propagation of cosmic rays. Unfortunately, cosmic rays can be measured only indirectly above an energy of $10^{14}$ eV through the cascades of secondary particles, called extensive air-showers (EAS), that they produce in the atmosphere. 

With the operation of modern large-scale experiments such as accelerator experiments located underground a development of Cosmic Ray Physics program is possible at CERN. Experiments at LEP and LHC are suitable for the study of properties of atmospheric muons. In this talk we will present some of the results reported by these experiments. Plans for future experiments like MATHUSLA will be also presented.

Recent Results and Upgrade of the Pierre Auger Observatory.

Cosmic rays are one of the most enigmatic and energetic form of radiation that the Earth receives from outer space. It is mainly composed of atomic nuclei with energies that extends from a few MeV up to 1 ZeV, this way, surpassing the reach of modern particle accelerators. Depending of the energy range considered, there are different aspects of these particles that are still unknown, which are related with their energy spectrum, composition, origin and acceleration mechanism. To shed light on these questions, data on the energy, chemical composition and arrival direction of cosmic rays are needed, as well as multi-messenger observations of the sky. In this talk, It will be presented a small review on the physics of cosmic rays at energies above 100 TeV, which has been difficult to study due to the low statistics in this energy regime. In addition, it will be reviewed some of the most important and recent observations of cosmic rays in this energy region and it will be discussed what we have learned from them.

El estudio de los neutrones emitidos durante una fulguración nos aporta información prístina del Sol, ya que su trayectoria no es perturbada por ningún campo electromagnético en el medio interplanetario, de esta forma, su interacción con el material atmosférico de la Tierra nos aporta una gran cantidad de información acerca de los mecanismos de aceleración de partículas que ocurren en la vecindad solar, así como de fenómenos relacionados con los rayos cósmicos (RC) secundarios en la atmósfera.

Las simulaciones de chubascos de partículas son usadas para seguir el flujo de partículas detectadas a nivel de tierra por diferentes detectores, además, permiten conocer los fenómenos físicos más importantes y cómo afectan su paso a través de la atmósfera. De este modo, podemos utilizar una base de datos estables para poder comprobar su validez, actualmente se cuenta con acceso a datos de diferentes instrumentos, tales como el Telescopio de Neutrones Solares (TNS) de la UNAM, que nos permitirán empatar las simulaciones que se realicen con las mediciones realizadas.

El observatorio HAWC está compuesto por 300 detectores de luz Cherenkov en agua (WCD por sus siglas en inglés), aislados ópticamente e instalados en un arreglo compacto. Este diseño permite utilizar al observatorio como un gigantesco detector de rastreo, en donde cada WCD puede ser utilizado como un pixel para reconstruir la trayectoria de partículas cargadas que viajan a través de HAWC. Este modo de uso del observatorio es eficiente cuando la trayectoria de las partículas es casi horizontal, lo que permite caracterizar las señales provenientes de la dirección del volcán Pico de Orizaba. La gran cantidad de materia que conforma al Pico de Orizaba, lo convierte en un útil filtro de muones producidos en cascadas atmosféricas con propagación horizontal, además de un blanco para producir reacciones neutrino-nucleón. En este trabajo se presentan los primeros resultados del análisis, utilizando 6 meses de datos.

 Since 1990, the cosmic ray observatory of Mexico City (2274 m a.s.l.) has been operating continuously. This observatory is composed of a neutron monitor (6-NM64) and a muon telescope, capable to detect the hadronic and hard components of the secondary cosmic radiation. The 6-NM64 is the only Latinamerican neutron monitor that belongs to the neutron monitor database.

In 2003, the solar neutron telescope (SNT) was installed at the top of the Sierra Negra volcano (4580 m a.s.l.), the SNT detects accelerated neutrons in solar flares and the background of galactic cosmic rays. This detector is part of the worldwide network of SNTs. In 2014, a new kind of detector was installed next to the SNT, the scintillator cosmic ray telescope (SciCRT), this new telescope can detect solar neutrons, muons and the background of galactic cosmic rays. The Sierra Negra cosmic ray observatory is mainly composed of the SNT and the SciCRT.

In this talk, we will present a description of the four detectors, as well as their operation; in addition, we will present the most significant results in the study of low energy cosmic rays and the numerical simulations carried out to understand and analyze the registered data by the observatories.
