Description

Quest for new materials for radiation detection is under way in these days. For the low ionization energy and for production of Cerenkov radiation, metals are plausible targets. To test Aluminum for Cerenkov radiation, it is designed, constructed, and operated a 2.54 cm X 10.16 cm X 25.4 cm four channel radiation detector based on an Aluminum block of the same dimentions and two scintillator blocks of 0.6 cm X 10.16 cm X 20.32 cm. Photo signals are read out using Hamamatsu avalanche silicon PMT attached at both ends of the Aluminum block and at scintillator blocks, placed one on top and on bottom of the Aluminum block. We present details of the design, construction, tests, operation, and preliminary results of this cosmic ray detector
